A Tropical Hideaway

A little piece of paradise in Parkstone!

The brief

This garden was a labour of love following the design ideas and passion of our client's late husband. An amazing craftsman and garden enthusiast he had completed work on the front garden of the property, and now it was our job to carry out the back garden project; transforming a damp area, overshadowed by trees, into a tropical paradise!

The design

To create structure and a pathway through the space we created a series of curved decks joined by raised walkways.

The main deck includes a seating area for 2-4 people. A second deck area features a wooden sculpture. Raised board walks with round poles lead you through the garden ‘rooms’ and hidden areas among the plants.

The tropical style of the garden is created using atmospheric planting: decking is softened with through-growing plants, the surrounding areas are planted with Japanese Maples, bamboos and grasses.

We worked closely with the client to ensure her ideas and those of her late husband were reflected within our design. The result is a a tropical oasis full of treasured memories, well-designed, balanced and continuing themes from the front garden they had created together.

Work in progress

After the survey and design, we started the building process with the ground works. We levelled off the site ready to set out.

After setting out, we drilled holes into the ground so we could concrete in the vertical round posts ready to take the frame of the board walk.

We were delayed by heavy rain for a few days, only when it stopped we could continue the construction with building the decks & board walks. First step was the framing, laying the decking and cutting them for shape.

After the surface was done, we created the oak sleeper walling and built the steps. After this, we planted and finished the job in lovely sunshine.

The end result

“Thanks for all the hard work by Peter, Tom, Suzie and Blue in creating my new back garden.  Nothing was too much trouble and I really appreciate their sensitivity with the project. The workmanship and attention to detail is excellent and the finished result has exceeded my expectations.  Everyone who’s seen the garden are amazed by the transformation.”
