Californian Style

A modern garden with plenty of "Wow factor" for entertaining

The brief

This steeply sloped garden had a deck that had seen better days, a swamp of a pool and a neglected appearance ready for a complete transformation. The client wanted clean lines, white space and a modern look with a focus on creating an impressive space for entertaining.

The design

The subsiding deck was to be replaced with a new structure that extended further into the available space. A minimalist ‘California’ look was achieved using white walls, light wood and fake grass for a low maintenance, immaculate finish.

A main deck area included a swimming pool and hot tub with feature planting including a 400 year old olive tree that was specially selected for a raised bed in the pool area.

Outdoor seating and dining areas including a sunken ‘snug’ with a dining table for eight and stylish poolside furniture extend the possibilities for different types of entertaining and relaxation.

A BBQ area for outdoor cooking, atmospheric lighting and a sound system complete the party scene!

This chic garden is the perfect place to host pool parties, soirees and get togethers that will impress friends and colleagues. From the planting and pool to the clever seating options we’ve created a boutique hotel look and feel that lends a touch of luxury to any occasion.

Work in progress

Prior to starting work on this project we had to apply for planning permission to replace the deck due to it being several metres off the ground. We handled this whole process on behalf of the client including an arboricultural statement.

The entire useable area of this garden design is supported on decking elevated at up to 4m from the sloping ground below. Strong foundations and a stable grounding for the extensive decking that included a swimming pool was vitally important and the first priority on starting this project.

The original deck had not looked good from ground level and special attention was paid to ensuring the new design offered appeal from all aspects. A clean white wall extended to the ground below and rhododendrons and wild meadow flowers and grasses were planted along the banks framing the property from the road.

The new space included 260m2 of decking, 120m2 of artifical grass and over 100 linear meters of white rendered walling.

The End Result

“We are extremely pleased with the way the Dorset Design & Build team approached and implemented our garden design project. From the initial consultation and design process through the build itself and subsequent after project service, the entire process has been well managed and superbly executed.
At all times the team were courteous, hard-working and flexible (even when we made a few design tweaks mid-project) and we would have no hesitation recommending them to other potential future customers.”
